This is a great project for beginner crocheters or seasoned crafters that are looking for items to sell at markets. This fish works up super quick and requires minimal supplies. I used I Love This Yarn in Periwinkle from Hobby Lobby.
Finished fish measures 4" in length with worsted weight yarn. If you want a larger fish, use super bulky yarn with a 6.5mm hook. TIP: If you're a cat owner, add some catnip inside (and embroider the eyes) and you'll have a cat toy!
You'll Need:
- Worsted Weight Yarn
- 4.5mm Hook
- Polyfil
- Yarn Needle
- 12mm Safety Eyes
- Round 1: Start with a magic circle of 6 stitches (6)
- Round 2: [inc in each st] (12)
- Round 3: sc in every st around (12)
- Round 4: [inc, sc in next st] repeat around (18)
- Round 5: sc in every st around (18)
- Round 6: [inc, sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24)
- Round 7: sc in every st around (24)
- Round 8: [inc, sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (30)
- Round 9-12: sc in every st around (30)
- Snap eyes between round 5 and 6, add a stitch marker or tie contrasting color yarn where the magic ring ends and next round begins. You want this to be centered between the eyes.
- Shape the fish as you go by pressing the sides in. You're working in the round, but it's more of a triangular shape so it should shape into the fish with ease.
- Stuff with polyfil as you go!

- Round 14: [dec, sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (18)
- Round 15: sc in every st around (18)
- Round 16: [dec, sc in next st] repeat around (12)
- Round 17: sc in every st around (12)
- Now you're going to close the body and add the back fin. You're going to do this by working triple crochet stitches on both sides of the fish body. See the photos, too.
- Chain 3, put 1 triple crochet (TC) in first and second set of sts, then 2 TC in third set of sts, then 1 TC in fourth set of sts, then 2 TC in fifth set of sts, then 1 TC in last set of sts, then chain 3 and slip stitch back into that last stitch. (Including the 2 sets of chain 3's, you should have 10 triple crochet stitches across)
- Cut an 8" tail and weave it into the fish
