As a mompreneur juggling work and family, finding time to focus can feel impossible. Here's how I turned an unlikely space—my bathroom—into a sanctuary of productivity and peace.
For the past few months, my mornings had become a relentless tug-of-war between motherhood and entrepreneurship. My 3-year-old son, deep in a challenging sleep phase, had unofficially claimed our bed as his kingdom. Any attempt to slip out of bed in the early hours would trigger his internal alarm clock. Gone were the peaceful 4 AM mornings I once cherished—those quiet, golden hours filled with a refreshing shower, energizing skincare routine, motivational self-pep talk, and two uninterrupted hours working on my business.
Every creak of the floor, every faint hum of the coffee machine, seemed to wake him. Before I knew it, my precious work time had dwindled to a fleeting 30 minutes—if I was lucky. The frustration was real, but so was my determination. I couldn’t let this phase derail my progress or momentum. That’s when I decided to think outside the box—or, more specifically, inside the bathroom.
The Bathroom Sanctuary Idea
If I couldn’t leave the room without waking him, then why not turn the bathroom into a productivity haven? It wasn’t a conventional solution, but motherhood often calls for unconventional creativity. My new setup included a cozy moon chair, a side table, a towel strategically placed under the door to muffle light and sound, and the essentials: coffee, meditation music, candles, and my laptop.
It felt a little ridiculous at first—working in a space traditionally reserved for quick showers and daily routines—but desperate times call for ingenious measures. And let me tell you, it’s been an absolute game-changer.
Reclaiming My Mornings
These days, my alarm goes off at 4 AM, and instead of tiptoeing through a minefield of creaky stairs and noisy appliances, I have a streamlined routine. First, I sneak downstairs for coffee, careful to avoid any sound that might stir my little one. I chose iced coffee because it makes less noise and takes less time than hot coffee. Then, I retreat back to my bathroom sanctuary, where I’ve laid out everything I need the night before.
I light two candles. I enjoy a slow, hot shower. Wash my face with cold water and eucalyptus-scented soap. Then I settle into my chair with my laptop, ready for a 2-hour work session. (None of which feels like "work" because I enjoy building my business so much). The combination of serenity and productivity has brought me a renewed sense of control and balance in my mornings. My son now wakes up around 6:30 AM, and I feel completely empowered to get my beloved morning shift back.
The Power of Adaptability
This unconventional setup has reminded me of something vital: as moms and entrepreneurs, we are masters of adaptability. Our lives are rarely straightforward, and often, our greatest breakthroughs come from moments of creative problem-solving. My bathroom sanctuary may not be Instagram-worthy, but it’s given me back the precious time I need to nurture my business—and myself.
Can You Relate?
Moms, can you relate to the struggle of finding time for yourself amidst the chaos? Have you ever done something unconventional to carve out a little “me” time? Maybe you’ve worked from a closet, the car during soccer practice, or even the laundry room. Whatever it is, I’d love to hear your stories. Let’s celebrate the ingenuity that keeps us moving forward, one creative solution at a time.
Motherhood and entrepreneurship may feel like a tug-of-war some days, but I’m learning that it doesn’t have to be a battle. With a little creativity and a willingness to adapt, we can find pockets of peace—even if they’re in the most unexpected places.
